West End news for Sept. 23, 2020

Meeting at new site

TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) in Kresgeville will resume meeting at a new location and day. The group will begin meeting at 6:15 p.m. every Wednesday at Cherry’s Family Restaurant, 593 Interchange Road, Kresgeville, beginning tonight.

Before the meeting, attendees will weigh in from 5 to 6 p.m. If anyone has gained a few pandemic pounds or has been unsuccessful with other programs, this group with its support and accountability will help people reach their respective goals. Contact Linda at 610-681-6789 for more information.

Regional meeting

The Chestnuthill-Jackson-Eldred-Ross-Polk Comprehensive Planning group will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Chestnuthill Township municipal building in Brodheadsville.

School board

The Pleasant Valley School District Board of Education will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday in the district office.

WE Democrats

The West End Democratic Association is scheduled to meet at 7 p.m. Thursday at the West End Volunteer Fire Company in Brodheadsville. Masks and social distancing are required.

The group’s bean soup and reorganization night is set for Oct. 22.

Fair Fall Fest

The West End Fair’s Fall Festival is this weekend, beginning on Friday and running Saturday and Sunday.

Bingo resumes

WEPOSC has announced that bingo resumes at Chestnuthill Park on Friday, beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Attendees are requested to bring a mask to wear inside. People not feeling well should stay home.

The event will follow COVID-19 guidelines and will be subject to change based on the most current COVID-19 health guidelines at the time of the event.

There will be door prizes, specials, pull tabs and prepackaged refreshment sold at this time - to be eaten while seated. No outside food or drink.

Pantry open

The SFRC, the food pantry at Effort UMC, will be open from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday.

SAL pig roast

In addition to the ongoing open community event, Party at the Pavilion at American Legion Post 927 in Gilbert every Friday and Saturday evening from 5 to 9 p.m., the SAL is holding its second annual pig roast there.

That is from 3 to 9 p.m. and only 250 tickets will be sold. There will be fireworks.

Ice cream social

Salem UCC, Gilbert, is hosting an ice cream social and basket raffle from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday. The rain date is Sunday. Due to COVID-19 guidelines, all attendees must wear a mask and practice social distancing.

The church’s Sunday service will be held at 10 a.m. inside the sanctuary. It is spaced and masks must be worn.

Church options

Effort UMC asks that if attending church on Sunday, remember to preregister by going to effortumc.org and select the service to attend: 8:30 a.m., 10 a.m. or 11:15 a.m.

Registrations are open on Thursday from 8:30 to 11:59 a.m. and Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. If you experience any difficulty, please call the church office and the secretary will be happy to assist.

An online service will be available also on Sunday morning after 8:30 a.m. for those who wish to “attend” church and want to do so from home. Go to effortumc.org and scroll down to the service.

Attendees at all church functions are reminded to wear masks, sanitize hands, practice social distancing and abide by CDC and state guidelines.

Communion news

St. John’s Lutheran Church on Merwinsburg Road, Effort, will continue with communion on the first Sunday of each month until the end of 2020. Worship time each Sunday is 9:30 a.m. All are welcome.

The church has announced that the fall rummage sale has been canceled.

The next sale will be in June 2021.

Three choices

Middlecreek Christian Church in Kresgeville offers three ways of being part of the Sunday 10:30 a.m. worship service: watching on the website by choosing the Livestream tab, live on the Facebook page @Middlecreek Christian Church, or joining the worshipping family live at the church.

Registration asked

Pleasant Valley Assembly of God Church, Brodheadsville, requests that people planning to attend the church take the time to register for the service you will be attending. People can register through the month of October at https://reopen.church/r/KgEqTSFS.

Worshippers are reminded that PV Kids and Nursery will only be available in the 11 a.m. service. The church wants to make sure space is available for guests.

If the two service options are not suiting, the church is continuing to have its services streamed live and broadcast on 99.3 FM.
