Walnutport to go ahead with trick-or-treat night

The coronavirus pandemic has put the kibosh on countless events, but not trick-or-treat night in Walnutport.

Borough Mayor Wayne Weidner announced at Thursday’s borough council meeting that the annual event will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 28.

“We’ve been getting phone calls about trick-or-treat,” Weidner said. “I decided we are going to have trick-or-treat in the borough.”

Weidner said he asks those who wish to participate to adhere to the borough’s recommendations to ensure the event is a success.

“I just feel it’s something we have to do,” he said.

The borough’s decision to host the popular event will assuredly be met with excitement by youth in the Northern Lehigh community.

Last month, the Northern Lehigh Events Committee made the decision to cancel this year’s Northern Lehigh Halloween parade due to COVID-19.

However, parade chairwoman Tiffany Rehrig-Schaeffer said the committee still wants to do something to celebrate the Halloween season for the community.

In place of the Halloween parade is the group’s first-ever “Haunt Your House” decorating contest, in which Rehrig-Schaeffer said residents of the district are encouraged to dress up their homes in the most bloodcurdling, spine-tingling fashion, and then send a picture to NLHalloweenParade@yahoo.com by Oct. 16.

She said entries will be posted on the Northern Lehigh Events Committee Facebook page.

Voting will open Oct. 17 and close Oct. 30. Winners will be determined by Facebook “likes” and be announced on Oct. 31.

Rehrig-Schaeffer said prizes will be awarded for first ($200), second ($100) and third ($50) place.
