Veterans memorial is refurbished in Slatington

A memorial in Slatington has been refurbished thanks to a group of individuals who view it as a labor of love.

The Rotary Club of Slatington and the Interact Club of Slatington teamed up this past Sunday to jazz up the Slatington Veterans Memorial at the corner of Main and Second Street.

A total of 17 volunteers worked five hours to achieve the goal, according to Eric Heiney, vice president of the Slatington Rotary Club.

Heiney said that he, along with Samantha Slack, vice president of the Interact Club, met with David Altrichter, chairman of the Slatington Veterans Memorial Committee.

“The past few years, the Rotary Club has volunteered once a year cleaning up the memorial,” Heiney said. “This year, it was the memorial’s request that we dig out the mulch to help correct the ongoing weed problem.”

Heiney said that the volunteers dug out old mulch and dirt and pulled out weeds. He added that stone was supplied by the borough, while Thrivent Financial donated drinks and lunch for the volunteers.

“The project is complete; we’re very happy with the results,” he said. “The park is now ready for 9/11 and Veterans Day.”

Heiney said he believes the project couldn’t have come at a better time with our country amid unrest.

“You constantly see on the news where memorials are being destroyed and defaced,” he said. “And our community cares about ours.”
