Palmerton man faces numerous drug charges after traffic stop

A Palmerton man is facing numerous drug-related charges as a result of a traffic stop made by state police at the Lehighton barracks at 8:20 p.m. Aug. 13.

Police said Lucas D. Boyd, 22, of Little Gap Road, was driving a 2012 Mazda 3 and pulled out of the Arby’s parking lot on Route 443 in Mahoning Township. After a chase in which the car was clocked at 60 mph in a 45 mph zone, leaving its lane of travel, the officer stopped the car on Mahoning Mountain Road.

Police said Boyd appeared to be shaking when he handed paperwork to the trooper and initially denied there was anything illegal in the vehicle. Police said the passenger appeared extremely nervous and related she is a recovering heroin addict.

Boyd consented to a search of the vehicle, and police found a black backpack with syringes with drug residue on them, baggies containing residue and a ledger of transactions that detailed amounts of drugs by weight and monetary value. Police said Boyd told them he used the ledger to account for drug transactions he makes.

Police said Boyd showed signs of impairment and failed field sobriety tests. He was taken to the St. Luke’s Lehighton Campus for a blood test, and taken to the state police barracks for processing.

He is charged with the manufacture, delivery or possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine) with intent to manufacture or deliver it, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Other charges he is facing include driving under the influence of drugs, exceeding speed limits and careless driving.

He was arraigned before Magisterial District Judge William Kissner of Palmerton and committed to the Carbon County Correctional Facility, Nesquehoning, in lieu of $75,000 bail, pending a preliminary hearing that will be held before Magisterial District Judge Casimir T. Kosciolek of Lansford.
