Woman faces DUI, drove car wrong way on 248

A Lehighton woman faces charges for erratic driving after she drove her vehicle the wrong way on Route 248 and nearly ran into other vehicles.

According to the affidavit of probable cause filed Aug. 6 by officer Frank Buonaiuto of the Franklin Township Police Department in the case against Jannette Lewis:

At 12:31 a.m. Jan. 3, Buoniauto was dispatched for an erratic driver on Route 248 after a caller explained to dispatch that the erratic driver was traveling east in the westbound lanes of Veterans Memorial Highway Route 248.

The caller described the vehicle as a blue Jeep Grand Cherokee that continued on 248 traveling the wrong way until the area of the Riverwalk Saloon.

Another driver reported that the Jeep hit a road marker near Keystone Harley Davidson.

The Jeep failed to stop, continuing to travel the wrong way toward Riverwalk Saloon.

Several other vehicles had to take evasive action in order to miss the Jeep, which then crossed the median coming to a stop on the shoulder near Club Road.

Both witnesses stopped, with one witness blocking the Jeep’s travel.

Upon arrival, Buoniauto approached the female driver, Lewis, 54, and asked for her registration and insurance cards.

Lewis attempted to locate the information, and was fumbling through cards dropping various items on the floor.

Buonaiuto smelled a strong odor coming from inside the vehicle and noticed Lewis’ eyes were red and glassy.

Lewis said that she was going to the Bowmanstown Diner.

She failed field sobriety tests and was transported to Lehighton Hospital for tests.

Lewis was advised that she is under arrest of suspicion of driving under the influence.

A blood test was taken, and the results showed her blood alcohol content was 0.22%.

Lewis faces charged of driving under the influence of alcohol; recklessly endangering another person; one-way roadways; and careless driving.

She is scheduled to have a preliminary hearing Sept. 16 before District Judge William Kissner of Palmerton.
