Council to send revisions for fireworks ordinance

Lehighton continues to make strides in its quest to update its fireworks ordinance one month after residents sounded off with concerns about the issue.

Borough council unanimously agreed on Monday to send revisions for its current fireworks ordinance to borough solicitor Jim Nanovic for proper verbiage.

From that point, an updated ordinance will be drafted and presented to council for approval. A petition with about 35 signatures was previously presented to the borough.

Last month, council decided that a new ordinance be put together and reviewed by Nanovic after several residents from South Second Street and surrounding areas spoke on the matter.

At that time, Councilman Ryan Saunders said that the borough’s police, fire and safety committee had met to discuss updating the borough’s fireworks ordinance.

Saunders, who noted at that time that an arrest had been made, urged residents to be proactive whenever they see someone setting off fireworks.

To report the issue, residents need to dial the Carbon County Communications Center’s nonemergency line at 570-325-9111.

Also at last month’s meeting, Mayor Clark Ritter suggested that a Neighborhood Crime Watch be started in which residents would take down a description of the person and the vehicle.

The borough previously posted on its website a reminder to residents of the fireworks law in Pennsylvania, and that it plans to enforce the state fireworks law to address the issue of fireworks being set off in the borough.
