Times News Community Yard Sale set for Saturday

If you’ve been itching to get out to a yard sale this summer, the Times News Media Group’s Community Yard Sale is the place to be.

More than 25 vendors will be participating in the event located at the Times News building, 594 Blakeslee Blvd. Drive W., Lehighton, on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“We wanted to have a place for the community to go for a yard sale,” said Jennifer Benninger, Times News advertising director. “I thought it would be a fun idea to have spots available on the front lawn and to have a big yard sale.”

The event was planned before the COVID-19 pandemic. Marketing Director Jennifer Rowden noted that Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines will be followed.

“We are stressing that we are following the CDC recommendations of mandatory masks and hosting less than 250 people at one time,” Rowden said. “We’ll have traffic control in and out of the parking lot and we will be asking people to wear their masks. Hopefully we don’t have to be turning away people at certain times, but we will be sticking with the recommendation of 250 total people at the event.”

Come hungry.

There will be plenty of delicious food for purchase such as Mary Herman’s food truck known as “KCL’s Great Food on the Go,” which is locally famous for cheesesteaks and pierogies.

“I’m in my fourth year and I’m usually down at the Bowmanstown boat launch Thursday-Sunday,” Herman said. “It was a longtime dream for me. I wanted to open a restaurant, so I was just kicking the idea around in 2016 and came up with the food truck. I love doing it, even though it’s a never-ending process. I can go up to 19 hours a day. When I’m at the boat launch, I usually show up at 7 a.m. and I get hit pretty hard throughout the day. When I go home it’s time to restock.”

Window shopping or ready to purchase? There will be plenty of items for sale.

Little Bean Soapery will be on site offering a wide variety of products. Owner Brandi Strauch and her daughter started making soap as a simple and fun activity. Family and friends enjoyed the products so much that they wanted to purchase more.

“We started making some really nice ones as Christmas gifts,” said Strauch, who grew up in Coaldale. “The people loved them and started buying them. We advanced to doing even more from scratch and advanced designs. We do some intricate fun ones and we also do some men’s items. We make beard items and colognes. We also just ventured into bath bombs.”

All attendees will receive free raffle tickets for a brown-bag raffle. There are plenty of prizes up for grabs donated by local businesses and organizations such as DNA Bikes, Lehighton Outdoor Center, Dunbar Bottling Inc., Mallard Market, tickets to the Lehigh Valley Zoo and much more.

“At one time it was a huge thing to pick up a Saturday newspaper and circle all of the upcoming events,” Rowden said. “The yard-sale hunters - the main source of their information was the Times News. We want people to know we are still a valid source of information and we have a robust classified section. We will have newspapers that are available for giveaway at the event, too.”

A rain date is scheduled for Sunday. Stay tuned to the Times News Facebook page for updates.
