W. Penn contemplates doing away with recycling next year

West Penn Township may do away with its recycling program by the start of next year.

Supervisors on Monday discussed its options for the recycling program, which is located behind the township police station.

The board said that while the program will continue the rest of this year, ultimately it may be eliminated due primarily to liability issues.

After the meeting, board Chairman Tony Prudenti told a reporter that one of the main concerns the board has is the liability that falls on the township.

“We’ve come to realize not only residents in the township are using this,” Prudenti said. “We’re getting told from other areas that are coming in.”

Additionally, Prudenti said, “The township would actually get revenue out of this when it first started up,” he said. “Now there’s no revenue. It’s costing the township money, and the liability is just not worth it.”

However, Prudenti said the board is looking to see whether the township can have someone else take over its recycling.

“We’re looking at other options,” he said. “It’s such a touchy subject.”

The township’s recycling lease was signed in 2012.
