Schuylkill leaders want Halcovage to resign as commissioner, delegate

The leaders of the Schuylkill County Republican Committee have sent a letter to Schuylkill County Commissioner George Halcovage requesting him to resign his public position in the wake of the alleged sexual assault complaints the county has investigated against him.

Halcovage stepped down as chairman of the board this week, but said he plans to continue to hold his commissioners’ post.

In a letter dated July 1, Dan Daub, county GOP chairman, and Mary Beth Dougherty and Brian Manning, state committee members, urged Halcovage to relinquish his elected position. They also asked him to step aside as a delegate to the Republican National Convention, a post to which he was elected in the recent primary election.

The trio said if Halcovage reviewed the facts in which they based their request for him to resign as a commissioner and delegate, he “will see that it is in the best interests of Schuylkill County and the Republican Party.”

The letter states Halcovage was elected a delegate on June 2, prior to anyone’s knowledge of “the serious allegations made against you by several county employees.”

The letter cites First Assistant County Solicitor and Risk Manager Glenn T. Roth Jr. being quoted as saying that ‘many of the allegations appear to be credible,’ “leading us to believe the claims have serious merit. While you have denied the allegations regarding sexual harassment, we believe that the cloud of suspicion is too great to lead our county and represent our party” at the convention.

Daub, Dougherty and Manning continue, “Schuylkill County deserves to have representation both in the courthouse and at our party’s convention that is not tainted by allegations of misconduct. We hope you will take this request seriously and swiftly and do what is right so that Schuylkill County and our party can move forward in a positive direction.”
