Fire company donates toward fifth annual fireworks display

A fireworks display set to go off this Fourth of July in Lehighton has received a welcome jolt of solidarity.

Members of the Lehigh Fire Co. No. 1 have agreed to donate to this year’s fireworks display, according to Ryan Saunders, president of the Lehighton Downtown Initiative, who made the announcement Tuesday afternoon.

“The LDI got an unexpected, but very much appreciated, surprise from the members of the Lehigh Fire Co. No 1,” Saunders said. “We are honored to have their support, and the town is blessed to receive such generosity from Lehigh Fire Co. No. 1.”

Saunders said the fire company at its last meeting unanimously voted to donate to the fifth annual Lehighton fireworks, to be held by the Lehighton Downtown Initiative at 10 p.m. Saturday. The event is sponsored by the Jim Thorpe Neighborhood Bank.

“They do so many great things for our town,” he said. “We are truly grateful they have chosen to support us in this effort.”

Saunders noted it’s difficult for nonprofit organizations such as the LDI to prosper under the current set of circumstances.

“But, through it all, to see such support for our town from our community warms my heart,” he said. “Knowing that we are not soliciting sponsorships this year for community events, Jim Thorpe Neighborhood bank, International Fireworks MFG, and Lehigh Fire Co, No. 1 have definitely stepped up to the plate to make sure our town gets the best fireworks display around.”

Saunders said he believes the overwhelming show of support couldn’t have come at a better time.

“In a time when we could really use a reason to celebrate, our partners are making sure we celebrate in style,” he said. “A very heartfelt thank you to all of our partners who have come together for Lehighton.”

The fireworks will be launched from the rear parking lot of the Lehighton Outdoor Center.

Saunders said the LDI was asked to run the Lehighton Fireworks by The Lehighton Parks & Rec Board.

The LDI had previously voted to cancel the fireworks display this year due to a lack of funds, he said.

But, within two days of making that decision, Saunders said the group was contacted by Bob Lowe from WEEU/WBYN radio station with an idea of putting together a simultaneous display between Reading and Lehighton and broadcasting on his radio show.

He said that Lowe then put them in contact with International Fireworks MFG out of Douglasville, which has been putting on fireworks displays for many local areas including Jim Thorpe for many years and agreed to work with them on the cost of putting together a display.

Along with the help of the Jim Thorpe Neighborhood Bank and Mauch Chunk Trust, the LDI was able to come with enough money so that the LDI could hold the fireworks display, Saunders said.

He previously said the LDI asks that patrons view this year’s fireworks display as the “light at the end of the tunnel.”

Last year, the Lehighton Borough Parks & Recreation Board partnered with the LDI to host the 2019 Lehighton Heritage Weekend over a two-day period.
