Man involved in Lansford standoff pleads guilty in pending case

A Carbon County man who was involved in a 10-hour standoff with police earlier last month entered a guilty plea in the county court on Tuesday in another criminal case and still has three others pending.

Brad Robert Simpson, 49, of Lansford, pleaded to one count of institutional vandalism for an incident on Dec. 6, 2019, at the county correctional facility in Nesquehoning.

Nesquehoning police were called to the prison for a man who damaged property at the jail. Police said while Simpson was in one of the booking rooms at the prison, he damaged a bench by pulling it out of the floor where it was anchored.

Simpson told President Judge Roger N. Nanovic II, who accepted the plea, “I was out of it.” He said he was high on drugs. He added, “my behavior was out of control.”

He said he was only at the prison for an hour or two when the incident occurred.

Simpson is no stranger to the criminal justice system, Nanovic noted. He said the defendant has an extensive criminal record.

Simpson is facing two counts of aggravated assault and one count each of terroristic threats, recklessly endangering another person and resisting arrest for the standoff with police that occurred at his residence on May 2. He faces a charge of possession of marijuana for an incident on Dec. 4, 2019, and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle for an incident on Aug. 21, 2019, both filed by Lansford police.

Nanovic noted Simpson has spent time in state correctional institutions, at least three separate times, and continues to struggle with alcohol and drug addictions.

Nanovic sentenced him to serve six to 12 months in prison and ordered restitution to the county for $13.99 to repair the bench. It was noted the bench itself was not damaged, just the pins holding it in the floor.

He must also pay court costs of about $1,000 and a $50 per month supervision fee while on parole. He was given credit for 34 days already served.

In the standoff on May 2, Simpson fired shots at police officers. He is charged with several counts of aggravated assault, Possession of firearm when prohibited, terroristic threats, recklessly endangering another person and resisting arrest. All charges have been waived to court.
