Schuylkill man given prison term for indecent assault

A Schuylkill County man was sentenced to a county prison term Tuesday in Carbon County court on a charge of indecent assault.

Ricky Raymond Burns Jr., 27, of Coaldale, was sentenced to serve three to one day less 24 months in prison by President Judge Roger N. Nanovic II. Burns previously pleaded to the charge. In exchange for the plea, the district attorney’s office agreed to drop two other counts of indecent assault.

Burns was arrested by Nesquehoning police for incidents that occurred between Dec. 1, 2016, and Dec. 31, 2017. He was charged with sexually assaulting a then 15-year-old female in the borough.

Burns, a father of five, told the court he was high on methamphetamine at the time of the assault. He also said he suffers with mental health issues.

Assistant District Attorney Brian B. Gazo said the commonwealth agreed to the plea deal after the victim and her mother accepted it. He said the incident warranted jail time for Burns.

In addition to the prison term, Burns was ordered to supply a DNA sample, get a drug and alcohol evaluation and follow any recommendation for treatment, submit to a sexual offenders evaluation, have no contact with the victim, have no unsupervised contact with any female juveniles, have no access to a computer or other electronic device, pay court costs of about $1,000 and pay a $50 per month supervision fee while on parole.

He will begin the jail term at 8 p.m. on June 5 and serve it on consecutive two-day weekends.
