A look back: May 21, 1988

Leonard J. Zubey of Walker Township became Pennsylvania’s newest millionaire Wednesday night at 7 o’clock when the numbers he selected Tuesday morning were drawn in the state’s Super Seven lottery.

He purchased the ticket at the Lutz News Agency, Tamaqua. The numbers were, in order, his son’s birthday, 12/7/60, his birthday, 6/16/31, and his old high school football jersey number, 77.

For the next 26 years, beginning in about 10 days, he will receive a check every May in the amount of $36,796.95. That’s $45,996.14, less Uncle Sam’s cut. His official winnings were $1,995,900.14.

Zubey bought the ticket before heading off to work in the machine shop of the Atlas Powder Company.
