Pa. COVID-19 cases surpass 54,000

The Pennsylvania Department of Health confirmed today an additional 1,323 positive cases of COVID-19, upping the statewide total to 54,238.

As the state continues its data reconciliation between the Department of Health and local reporting agencies, it’s reporting 200 more deaths, bringing the number of people who have died from the novel coronavirus to 3,616.

The department attributes these added deaths to “the past several weeks,” according to a Friday news release.

In Carbon County, the COVID-19 cases increased by three Friday for a total of 192. The county’s death rate stayed the same, at 16.

Lehigh County has 3,140 cases of the virus, up 38 from the previous day, and 114 deaths.

Luzerne County tracks 2,347 cases, up 15 between Thursday and Friday. The county has 120 deaths.

Monroe County has 1,198 cases of COVID-19, adding four new cases overnight. The county has seen 63 die.

Northampton County has 2,390 cases, up 35 from the day before. The county has 153 deaths.

And Schuylkill counts eight new cases, bringing its total to 430. The county has four new deaths with a total of 13.

According to the Department of Health:

There are 216,321 patients who have tested negative to date. Of the patients who have tested positive to date the age breakdown is as follows:

Nearly 1% are aged 0-4;

Nearly 1% are aged 5-12;

1% are aged 13-18;

Nearly 6% are aged 19-24;

37% are aged 25-49;

26% are aged 50-64; and

Nearly 28% are aged 65 or older.

As previously reported, the majority of those hospitalized are aged 65 or older, as are most of the patients who have died.

To date, there have been no pediatric deaths.

The department says there are 10,919 resident cases of coronavirus and 1,542 employee ones in personal care and nursing homes, bringing the statewide total to 12,461 cases in 522 facilities across over 40 counties.

About 3,553 of Pennsylvania’s COVID-19 cases are in health care workers.
