Man shot by officer in Monroe facing charges

A Stroudsburg man who was shot by a police officer after officers responded to an incident at 331 Main St., Stroudsburg, has been charged by Pennsylvania State Police with five offenses in the aftermath of the incident.

Meanwhile, the unnamed officer who fired the shot injuring the man, has been placed on administrative leave while the investigation unfolds.

Ramy Yassin, 29, who police said was treated on scene for the gunshot injuries and transported to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Pocono, East Stroudsburg, is facing charges of aggravated assault, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person, disorderly conduct and harassment.

The incident happened when Stroud Area Regional Police were summoned at 4:31 p.m. Wednesday to investigate a report of a suspicious man at the scene. Upon arrival, officers made contact with Yassin, who brandished a knife. Authorities said during the incident, an officer fired his service weapon, striking Yassin.

Police said the officer has been placed on leave as per the department policies.

A state police Troop N Major Case Team is conducting an investigation into the incident. Police said once the investigation is completed, it will be turned over to the Monroe County District Attorney for a ruling on the matter.
