Marian’s Fritz makes 2A All-State team

Another outstanding season.

Another All-State team.

On Tuesday, Marian standout Tyler Fritz was named to the Pennsylvania Sports Writers Class 2A All State Boys Basketball team - the third consecutive year that he has been honored with an all-state selection.

“I’m thrilled for Tyler,” said Marian coach John Patton. “He’s a player who has just kept improving and improving throughout his high school career.

“He was never satisfied with what he had accomplished previously. He was always focused on getting better. He definitely deserves this honor.”

Fritz scored over 30 points in a game 13 times this season, including a season-high 41 points against Notre Dame of East Stroudsburg, leading the Colts to a 19-6 record and a Schuylkill League Division 3 championship.

Patton said Fritz’s ability to consistently put up points - despite being the constant focus of opposing defenses - was a reflection of how his game developed during his Marian career.

“Tyler made three all-state teams and he did it three different ways,” Patton said. “As a sophomore, he was still primarily a standstill jump shooter and got a majority of his points from the perimeter. As a junior, he became more of a scorer. He not only hurt you from the perimeter, but he was able to get to the basket and finish inside.

“But this season was definitely his most dominant. He scored every way possible ... three-point shooting, midrange jumpers, drives to the basket, putbacks underneath. He was so hard to contain because he could beat you so many different ways.”

Patton credited Fritz’s increased power and strength as a key in taking his game to the next level.

“Tyler put on about 20 pounds of muscle during this past offseason,” Patton said. “From the time he came in as a freshman, he was always someone who could shoot the basketball. But as the years went by, he became more and more of a scorer and not just a shooter.

“This year, he took that to another level. He was still just as dangerous on the perimeter, but he also became a force inside.”

That was reflected in Fritz’s scoring numbers. After averaging just over 20 points a game as a junior, Fritz’s numbers exploded this season, increasing to 27.96 points a game. He was far from one dimensional, however, as he led the Colts in rebounding at 7.8 boards per game and added 2.9 assists per contest as well.

“Tyler did whatever we needed him to do this season,” Patton said. “Whether it was scoring, rebounding, handling the ball, facilitating our offense, or even locking down another team’s top player ... whatever the need, we knew Tyler could fill the role.”

Fritz finished his career as Marian’s all-time leading boys basketball scorer with 1,959 points.

The only other District 11 player on the Class 2A team was Moravian Academy’s Abe Atiyeh.

Atiyeh, who will be a preferred walk-on at Boston College next season, was a first team selection.
