Palmerton plans to mark Easter with music

This year’s Easter celebrations might not include mass egg hunts or pictures with costumed bunnies. But in Palmerton, there will be song.

On Sunday, the carillon at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in the borough will sound. Five minutes past noon, “The Star-Spangled Banner” will begin to play, followed by Easter hymns.

At the musical presentation’s end, the church bell at St. John’s United Church of Christ will ring 33 times, commemorating Jesus Christ’s 33 years on Earth.

Richard Nothstein, a Palmerton council member and co-organizer of the Easter celebration, said in the midst of this coronavirus pandemic, “we need some solidarity and compassion for each other.”

That’s what the concert is for.

“Thousands will hear it and keep it in their hearts I hope,” Nothstein said.

“It’s just an emotional time,” he added. “It’s just something we have to do.”

Those who aren’t in earshot of Holy Trinity are encouraged to park at the intersection of Fifth and Lafayette to listen in.
