A look back: March 23, 1972

“One day somebody’s going to get killed. Every day buses loaded with kids from the Vo-Tech School and buses loaded with little children go up and down that hill. People don’t want it to happen, but it’s going to happen. One day, somebody’s going to get killed.”

Jim Thorpe Police Chief Francis Bennick spoke with concern as he stood at the bottom of the Mansion House Hill this morning beside a giant boulder which was one of several that fell onto Route 209 during a rockslide last night, nearly midway up the hill on the Jim Thorpe side.

The rock slab next to Bennick measured 13 feet long, 6 feet wide and nearly 5 feet high, blocking the southbound lane of the three-lane road.
