Tamaqua Drama Club to perform Newsies

Dancing and much more action will be on display at the Tamaqua Area High School later this month.

The Tamaqua Drama Club will hit the stage one final time this school year as it brings the musical “Newsies” to the community March 19-21.

“I’d say that all of our students, stage crew, drama club — everyone is so committed to this show,” said sophomore Liam Borden, who plays the role of Davey Jacobs. “That’s why it’s going to be amazing and I feel like people should come see it because of how much effort is put into this.”

“Newsies” is based off a true story surrounding the 1899 Newsboys’ strike in New York City, which lasted for a few weeks and was a detriment to the circulation of two major papers.

“It’s all about them coming together to fight for labor rights, fair prices and working conditions. It’s really a story about the group,” said director Adriane Drum. “I picked it about a year ago. We have a lot of boys right now and I thought our dancing has improved enough to do it. I just wanted to kind of do it while we still had the boy numbers (among the drama club).”

One of the biggest challenges has been learning all of the dancing in the production.

“There’s tap-dancing involved and there are different choreographers for different things,” said freshman Grace Kinder, “We’ve put so much practicing in — not just here, but at home. Dancing is always something that I’ve kind of struggled with, but with drama club, it’s gotten better with how much we’ve practiced.

“From ensemble, to the leads, to the supporting leads, we put in so much effort. We want everyone to come and see it, and see what we have to show and how it impacts the audience.”

Senior Nathaniel Noftz noted that this group has practiced six days per week since January — including six-hour practices on Saturdays.

“It’s nonstop action,” Noftz. “There are no blackouts in the entire show. There’s huge dance numbers, it’s very exciting as a whole. It’s definitely something you want to come see.”

Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for students and $2 for preschool. Show times are March 19, 6 p.m.; March 20, 7 p.m. and March 21, 2 p.m.

“Newsies” will be special to many seniors who will take the stage for the last time.

“I have a lot of very talented people that have been with me for a while,” Drum said. “It’s very bittersweet, we like to send them off right, but it’s also heartbreaking at the same time, because we obviously get to be very close. It’s sad to say goodbye to them.
