LVHN could submit land development plan by March

Lehigh Valley Health Network could submit a land development plan for its forthcoming hospital in Mahoning Township as early as next month, an engineer associated with the project said Wednesday.

Nathan Oiler, of RKR Hess, told the township’s planning commission LVHN hopes to submit a land development plan in time for the commission’s next meeting, which will take place in March.

“We’re trying to keep this all moving,” Oiler said.

In the meantime, there are still questions for which LVHN has to find answers. For example, Oiler said a study is currently being conducted to ensure the land where the hospital will be built doesn’t hold any historical or archaeological significance.

LVHN got the green light for its hospital off Route 443 in November. A month before, the planning commission issued a recommendation to Mahoning supervisors to deny the network’s proposed $65 million facility.

But LVHN received support from the community. Members turned up to a public hearing between supervisors and the network late last year, where the future hospital’s fate was decided. More than a dozen residents testified in support of the medical center making its home in Mahoning.

As a result, the board ruled in LVHN’s favor.

Its hospital, to be erected kitty-cornered to the Walmart, is slated to open some time next year.

The number of health care facilities in Carbon has surged in recent years. St. Luke’s Health Network is working on a hospital of its own, located mere miles away from LVHN’s future one. Over the past year, the county has gained multiple urgent cares between the two networks.

Just this week, LVHN unveiled its plan to transform a former Payless shoe store in the Carbon Plaza Mall into LVHN Imaging and Breast Health Services, which it will open this spring.
