Carbon man admits assaulting guard at jail

A Carbon County man admitted on Tuesday afternoon in the county court to assaulting a corrections officer at the county prison and was sentenced to a state correctional institution.

Marcos Antonio Perez, 28, of Lansford, pleaded guilty before Judge Steven R. Serfass to one count of aggravated assault for an incident on Aug. 19, 2019.

Nesquehoning police were called to the prison for a report of an assault. On scene police, through an investigation, learned that Perez punched a corrections officer in the face while he was being moved from one area of the prison to another. The officer suffered a jaw injury and lost some teeth.

Perez told Serfass he wanted to be sent to a state prison rather than stay in the county facility. Serfass granted his request.

Perez was sentenced to serve 14 to 48 months in a state prison and was ordered to make restitution to the county’s insurance carrier for $8,816.77, pay court costs of about $1,000 and supply a DNA sample.

The sentence runs concurrent with a term Perez is serving on a probation violation.
