Northern Lehigh students to take part in honors band

Ten Northern Lehigh High School students have been specially selected to demonstrate their first-rate musical skills.

Those select few will be joined by over 100 of the best student musicians in Lehigh County at the 62nd annual Lehigh County Honors Band Concert.

Presented by William Allen High School, the concert will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the William Allen High School Auditorium.

The snow date is 2 p.m. Sunday.

The host director this year is Eric Mosser, William Allen High School band director.

Northern Lehigh Band Director David Carroll said the students who have been selected for the festival this year include Brittney Diehl, Cydney Krause, Dylan Kuntz, Owen Levan-Uhler, Parker Musselman, Cadence Rehrig, Maggie Reitz, Calvin Shelly, Camryn Torres and Nate Walters.

“My students look forward to this festival every year because they have the opportunity to interact with students from other Lehigh County high school band programs,” Carroll said. “Many of these students become friends. The students selected to this program also have the opportunity to work with other high school directors, and are able to perform in a highly talented concert band setting that has more comprehensive instrumentation and is much larger than the typical high school concert band in the county.”

Carroll added that it takes about 20 hours of rehearsal on three separate weekends to prepare the Lehigh County Honors Band concert each year.

“Annually, the students selected to this program make the commitment to participate and work diligently to create a wonderful program,” he said. “Their ongoing commitment and dedication to this honors program is a profound testament to the value that our students place on this experience every year.”

Northern Lehigh last hosted the honors festival in 2013 and previously in 2003.

The Lehigh County Honors band consists of students from the 11 high schools in Lehigh County: Northern Lehigh, Southern Lehigh, Whitehall, Northwestern Lehigh, Catasauqua, Salisbury, Allentown Central Catholic, Emmaus, Parkland, Dieruff and William Allen High School.

The students are selected to represent their schools by the Lehigh County Band Directors Association in December.

The selections for this year’s concert are: “The Star-Spangled Banner,” “LOL (Laugh Out Loud),” “At Water’s Edge,” “Amparito Roca,” “The Greatest Showman,” “Quad City Stomp,” “Star Wars — The Marches,” “Fable,” “Riders for the Flag,” “They Shall Run and Be Free,” “Children of a Different Sun,” and “Symphonic Chorales.”
