For the second time in four days, a rollover crash on Mahanoy Avenue in Hometown closed Route 54 in both directions.
Emergency responders were summoned to a reported two-car crash with injury shortly after 11 a.m. Thursday about 1/4 mile west of the Hometown intersection.
According to those at the scene, a Chevrolet SUV collided with a Dodge Caravan with the force of the impact flipping the caravan on its side. The collision also sheared a utility pole and mailbox. The SUV ended up on the lawn of a residence while the van came to rest in the westbound lane.
The driver of the Caravan, a female, was airlifted from a landing zone set up at the Hometown Commons Shopping Plaza parking lot.
Traffic was rerouted from late morning into the afternoon while the vehicles were removed and a utility crew repaired the sheared pole. Rush Township police are investigating.
Responding were ambulances and emergency units from Tamaqua, Hometown, Lehighton and Ryan Township.
On Monday, a westbound tractor-trailer flipped on the same road and spilled its load, closing the highway in both directions for several hours.
