Mahoning supervisors will meet Monday for a public hearing on a proposed hospital off Route 443.

Revealed in August, Lehigh Valley Health Network’s plans include a $65 million facility along the well-traveled highway. It would be built in what is now open farmland, located catty-cornered to a Walmart Superstore in the township.

In October, Lehigh Valley Health submitted a conditional use application for the hospital, which the township’s planning commission said supervisors should reject, with one member calling the recent surge of care facilities opening in Carbon an “ego thing” for Lehigh Valley Health and St. Luke’s Health Network.

“A race between your facility and St. Luke’s, that’s all I see this as,” Bruce Steigerwalt, planning commission member and Mahoning supervisor, told Lehigh Valley Health officials last month.

Lehigh Valley Health Network will now have to present its case in front of the board of supervisors of Mahoning Township in a special public hearing to be held at Mahoning Valley Ambulance at 902 Mill Road.
