Tamaqua Drama Club to present Les Miserables

A little bit of everything.

That’s what the Tamaqua Drama Club will put on display throughout the latter part of this week and weekend.

The group will perform Les Miserables at the Tamaqua Area High School at 6 p.m. today, 7 p.m. Friday and 2 p.m. Saturday.

“I’m excited to put on the show for everyone because I think it shows a lot of our talents,” said Kipp Tonkin, a senior who will be playing the character Javert. “We’re a very musical school. We put so much hard work into this, that our vocals can really be heard throughout. I don’t think there’s any song in this show that would leave anyone unsatisfied.”

The vocals of the production are more complex than usual. Therefore, more time was needed to prepare. Students auditioned for the production in May.

“Some obstacles included learning all of the songs,” said Liam Borden, a sophomore in his first lead role, playing the character Marius Pontmercy. “I quickly adjusted to new things I didn’t think about before. I adjusted and other people had to kind of do the same thing.”

In fact, vocal coach specialists were brought in over the summer to help craft the sound of the cast.

“This is kind of a dream show for a lot of students,” said director Adriane Drum, who is an English teacher at the high school. “It’s so well-known, so when they found out they were doing it, they were 100 percent in since day one. We’ve been working for six months on this.”

“This show has a lot of action, it’s nonstop until the end,” said senior Nathaniel Noftz, playing the character Jean Valjean. “A lot of plot twists and turns. Very difficult vocals, but very good vocals. All the songs sound really good and it’s just a great story overall, it hits everyone differently.”
