UVO hangs flag

A special flag is flying over the entrance of Palmerton.

The flag — which is slightly larger than the flag that is usually there — only makes appearances for holidays that celebrate veterans.

That same flag also once waved in Iraq, put there by U.S. soldiers after capturing the palace of Saddam Hussein. Daniel Dailey, the former sergeant major of the Army who retired in August, sent the flag to his hometown of Palmerton.

After receiving the flag from Dailey, the Palmerton United Veterans Organization paid to have a pole installed at the town’s entrance off Route 248. The organization dedicated that pole to Dailey in 2016, hoisting the flag up its 80-foot stretch every Veterans Day and Memorial Day.

“I love it when I drive into town and see that flag stretched out,” Ed Moyer, commander of Palmerton United Veterans Organization, said.

UVO members switched the flags Tuesday morning. It took a team of men holding it from corner to corner to keep the cloth from touching the ground. Once in the air, the men below looked up and saluted.

The flag will hang there until Veterans Day, Nov. 11, passes.

The UVO has also hung more than 270 hometown heroes banners in the borough, and the organization is still accepting applications for ones.
