Bus driver’s DUI case is continued to next year

The trial for a bus driver who allegedly drove students while drunk then walked off the job, leaving the children at a gas station, will not happen until next year.

The case for Lori Anne Mankos, 44, of Walnutport, has been continued until April 6, 2020.

Mankos was taken into custody in March at her home and charged with 26 counts of endangering the welfare of children, and one count each of DUI, careless driving and reckless driving after the incident.

According to state police at Bethlehem, Mankos was driving a school bus on March 1 with 26 students on board when she parked the bus at a Sunoco station in Bath after allegedly driving it erratically.

At the time, police said she handed the keys to an employee at the station and walked away from the scene.

The 26 students on the bus were left unattended until Northampton Area School District officials, Moore Township police and state police could arrive.

Students reported that they noticed Mankos missed bus stops, wasn’t following the route and drove on the wrong side of the road.

Cincinnati, Ohio-based bus contractor First Student provides busing services for the school district.

A representative from the company said they are cooperating with investigators.

Northampton School District officials were thankful no one was injured in the incident and noted that in the over 20 years the district contracted with First Student, nothing like this had happened before.
