Mahoning plans for new municipal building

With a new municipal building on their mind, Mahoning supervisors still have a ways to go before they can take any concrete steps toward its actual construction.

The township is still gathering specifications for the forthcoming structure’s plumbing and electrical, heating, cooling and ventilation systems. The new building’s location has also yet to be determined; it could remain on Mahoning Drive or relocate to a township-owned field closer to Seneca Road.

The new building would probably require a new septic system as well — Bruce Steigerwalt, vice chairman of the board of supervisors of Mahoning Township, noted Wednesday evening — which means septic testing must be conducted.

Chairman John Wieczorek said the board should get together “sometime in the near future” to hash out a more detailed course of action.

“We need to find something that’s definitive,” Wieczorek told his fellow supervisors.

The current building on Mahoning Drive East was built in the late 1960s, according to the township office. A new building has been on the municipality’s radar for years, and Steigerwalt said it raised millage rates last year to help cover the cost.

When asked what made Mahoning supervisors decide to pursue the project, Steigerwalt simply motioned toward the cramped meeting room he was sitting in.

Steigerwalt then began listing the reasons.

“The conditions of this building, the fact that we don’t have enough storage,” he said. “We don’t have adequate bathrooms. They’re not handicap accessible. We have the police department upstairs, which is not handicap accessible.”

Mahoning Council originally considered gutting and remodeling the current 4,800-square-foot building, but that would have run upward of $1 million, the township’s secretary said.

Erecting a new structure with an additional covered entryway, on the other hand, rounded out to just under $900,000.

At the moment, the township has about $200,000 set aside for the new structure, Steigerwalt estimated.
