ES North tops Bears to end long losing streak

DINGMANS FERRY – It had been nearly three years since East Stroudsburg North’s last victory.

But the Timberwolves sure didn’t look like they forgot how to celebrate.

East Stroudsburg North snapped a 29-game losing streak with a come-from-behind 28-21 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference win over Pleasant Valley on Friday night. The Timberwolves last triumph came in a 40-38 win over Pocono Mountain West on Oct. 21, 2016.

“I am just so proud of these guys for coming back each and every week and working, because we’ve had a lot of rough games down the stretch,” said first-year East Stroudsburg North head coach Derek Schaller. “And those guys could have put their head down at any moment, but they keep coming back every day at practice, putting the work in, and it finally paid off for these guys.”

The Timberwolves (1-6) didn’t fold when faced with a 14-0 deficit in the second quarter, either.

Senior Quarterback Rhasaan Jacobs used his legs and his arm to bring North back, accounting for 202 yards rushing while also throwing for 54 yards.

Jacobs did most of his damage in the second half, rushing for 116 yards and three scores, including a decisive touchdown and two-point conversion to give the Timberwolves a 22-21 lead with 8:09 left in the game.

“I just told him, ‘You’ve taken this ball all the way down the field, you’re a senior, you’re a leader. We’re putting it in your hands, find the end zone,” said Schaller. “And that one point gives us the lead, and it’s a much easier game to play with a one-point lead than a one-point deficit. We just put the ball in the senior’s hands and let him take it home.”

Jacobs added a 30-yard touchdown with 2:26 left after North stopped the Bears (0-7) on fourth down on the next drive.

“Give North all the credit in the world,” said Pleasant Valley head coach Blaec Saeger. “Rhasaan Jacobs is a hell of a player; we could not tackle him. They came in with a lot of heart.”

Malik Berryman added 73 yards rushing for the Timberwolves.

The Bears put together two long scoring drives in the first half. The first was a 66-yard march on their opening possession of the game that ate up 5:40, with quarterback Jack Stephens going in from 1-yard out.

PV converted on third down twice on the drive, and got a first down on fourth-and-one after an offsides penalty to stay on the field.

The Bears went 10 plays, covering 63 yards on their next drive, with Stephens going in from 4 yards out to make it 14-0 with 11:29 to play in the second quarter.

Both teams failed to convert on fourth-down on their next drives.

After stopping the Bears near midfield. Jacobs carried the ball 26 yards for a score to cut it to 14-6 with 5:27 left in the second quarter, a score that held going into halftime.

Jacobs opened the third quarter by leading the Timberwolves on a 69-yard drive, capping it with a 24-yard touchdown run and hitting David Awuah for the two-point conversion to tie it at 14-14.

Pleasant Valley responded with another long drive, this one 65 yards, with Stephens scoring his third touchdown of the game to make it 21-14 with 3:57 to play in the third quarter.

The Bears crossed midfield twice in the fourth quarter, but came up empty both times. PV’s final drive ended on an intercepted pass by Johndlee Francois with 2:09 to play.

CARRYING THE LOAD … Jared Salazar carried the ball 26 times for 130 for the Bears, while Robert Papaleo added 69 rushing yards on 11 carries.

FAMILIAR FACES … Saeger had a long tenure as an assistant coach at ES North, and still teaches at the school. “Those are good kids, and I know them. I’m proud of them. I wish it didn’t happen against me, but it did, and they deserved it. They outplayed us,” Saeger said.

UP NEXT ... The Bears host Pocono Mountain West on Friday.
