For the first time in their respective histories, the Lehighton Band and Palmerton Band will combine to present a special end-of-summer concert.

The bands will combine to present a special free band concert in Palmerton’s Park Bandstand at 2 p.m. on Sunday.

Joseph Plechavy and Bradly Cressley, directors of the Palmerton Band and the Lehighton Band respectively, came up with the idea of combining the bands annually to present an additional band concert at the end of the summer band season.

They plan to rotate the concert between the Palmerton Bandstand and the Lehighton Park Amphitheater.

There are a few members who play in both the Lehighton and Palmerton Bands, including both directors, but there are many members who play exclusively with one or the other.

By combining the two bands, it is expected there will be over 50 members in the band.

Each director chose six selections from the libraries of each band. The songs were chosen to provide music from various genres and were intended to create a concert with songs that entertain all audiences.

Included in the concert are two pieces that feature a section of the band. The clarinet section of the band will be featured in a song titled “Clarinet Candy” by Leroy Anderson, and the trombone section will be featured in a piece titled “Holiday for Trombones” by David Rose.

Popular selections will include “The Best of Journey,” arranged by Paul Murtha; “Bruno Mars Greatest Hits,” arranged by Victor Lopez; and “I’m Shipping Up to Boston,” arranged by Sean O’Laughlin.

Show tune and movie music will include “Lion King Broadway Selections,” arranged by Jay Bocook; “Somewhere in Time,” arranged by Calvin Custer; “Jersey Boys Highlight,” arranged by Michael Brown; and “Remember Me” from the movie “Coco,” arranged by Johnnie Vinson.

A band concert would not be complete without marches, and fans of John Philip Sousa will not be disappointed. March selections include “The Liberty Bell,” “The Lambs’ March,” and “The Stars and Stripes Forever March,” all by Sousa.

Additionally, the combined bands will play a modern style overture titled, “River of Life,” by Steven Reineke.

The public is invited to come out and enjoy this free evening of music in the Palmerton Park.

There is no charge for the concert. Concertgoers can use the park benches, or bring their own lawn chairs to enjoy the concert.
