Slatington History Preservation Committee to sponsor second annual cemetery walk

A cemetery walk in remembrance of several of Slatington’s finest is about to step off.

Sponsored by the Slatington History Preservation Committee, “A Walk with Slatington Businessmen” will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Union Cemetery, Route 873 and Cemetery streets, in Washington Township.

The second annual walk will visit the graves of six influential 19th century Slatington businessmen who were instrumental in the borough’s economic development and helped the town prosper. The rain date is Sept. 21.

Tim Snyder, first vice president of the group, noted that the committee held “A Walk Among the Slate Barons” last year in the Fairview Cemetery.

“It’s for different cemeteries in the area to make people aware of the history of some of the prominent people,” Snyder said. “Our main goal is to generate enough interest; we want to establish a historical museum that would be open to everyone in the community.”

Treasurer Robert Stettner said there will also be a display table with examples of ads and pictures.

“We’re hoping to attract more than just borough residents, newcomers who don’t know about our cemeteries,” Stettner said. “We want to expose people to Slatington’s history.”

Here’s a brief look at the businessmen:

• Henry Kuntz (1811-1878): Clerk, schoolteacher, slate baron and one of the borough’s first businessmen who owned and operated numerous slate quarries in the area.

• Alvin Haines (1827-1886): Entrepreneur, inventor, slate baron and statesmen who operated Hanies Brothers Dept. Store with his brother.

• Thomas Kern (1808-1885): Entrepreneur, who founded the Thomas Kern Lumber Company on Cherry Street.

• Abel Boyer (1858-1932): Tradesmen and entrepreneur, who along with his brother purchased and ran Boyer & Brother Hardware.

• Henry Bittner (1844-1922): Owned and operated the Bittner House Hotel, ran adjoining livery stables, and was treasurer of the volunteer fire company.

• A.P. Berlin (1830-1914): Entrepreneur, inventor, professor and slate baron who owned the Washington Slate Company.
