Dance party at Mauch Chunk Ballroom

Do you like to dance? Want to try a southern style swing dance with a Cajun influence?

If so, the Mauch Chunk Museum and Cultural Center has an event for you.

The nonprofit is hosting Li’l Anne and Hot Cayenne, a Zydeco dance group, on Sept. 14 as part of a celebration event honoring a local couple who have volunteered their time to Jim Thorpe for many years.

Jonathan Blackwell-Rodgers, program manager for the Mauch Chunk Museum and Cultural Center, said that the organization wanted to honor John and Karen Bushnell, who for years, volunteered their time and talents to beautifying Jim Thorpe through flowers at Dimmick Memorial Library, the train station and other areas around the borough; as well as for preserving the living history of the town through the purchase of several Victorian homes.

“It’s all to honor them and support and thank them,” Blackwell-Rodgers said.

He said that the idea of a night of dancing came about through the Bushnell’s own interests in Zydeco dance.

“(John) said, instead of having a boring thing, let’s bring a band in and have dance lessons and a party.”

Doors open at 6:15 p.m. with Zydeco dance lessons beginning at 7. Li’l Ann and Hot Cayenne then takes the ballroom stage at 7:30 and will heat the place up with the popular southern style dance party until 10:30 p.m. Light refreshments and snacks will be served.

“It’s going to be a fun night,” Blackwell-Rodgers said.

The Mauch Chunk Museum and Cultural Center is located at 41 W. Broadway.
