Girl raising money for Dorian victims

It was a normal Wednesday evening when Camryn Nonweiler sat down to eat dinner. But then, her mother turned on the television.

The images 8-year-old Camryn saw on screen devastated her. It was news coverage of Hurricane Dorian and the damage it had inflicted on the Bahamas.

Dorian hit land as a Category 5 storm. As of Friday afternoon, the death toll was 30 people, but with hundreds still unaccounted for, that number is expected to rise.

“I saw the hurricane, and everything destroyed,” Camryn recalled. She added that she’d never seen anything like it.

“I felt shocked,” Camryn said.

She knew she wanted to do something, and she asked her mother, Jenny Nonweiler, if they could help. They decided to start a donation collection. Jenny made a post on Facebook to spread the word, which has since been shared more than 200 times.

“I’ve been on Facebook for 10 years, and I’ve never had anything spread so fast,” Jenny said.

Camryn plans to ask congregants at her grandmother’s church to donate to her campaign. She also set up a booth in the Palmerton Borough Park to collect donations during the annual community festival. She already had plans to attend the event, as her parents own Nonweiler Amusements, the company that supplies the carnival rides used throughout the weekend.

Camryn said her ultimate goal is $1 million.

But even if she doesn’t raise that much, Camryn said, she wants to do what she can to help the storm’s victims rebuild their lives.

“I want a lot of people to have a long life,” she said.

If you want to help Camryn get closer to her goal, you can drop donations off at her booth in the Palmerton Park, located on the rides side. She is in a white tent, last in a row of carnival games.

She is also accepting food, diapers, blankets, pillows and other living essentials.
