Jury finds Tamaqua woman guilty

A jury returned a guilty verdict on five counts for Karen D. Reed, 63, Tamaqua, in a trial held Aug. 21 in Schuylkill County.

Reed was arrested by Tamaqua Police Officer Karl Harig on May 4, 2017, following an accident in the Boyer’s IGA parking lot. According to the arrest report, Reed was driving under the influence when she hit a parked vehicle and left the scene.

During the trial, expert witness Matthew McMullin, a forensic toxicologist with NMS Laboratories, testified as to drugs found in a blood test on Reed. McMullin said that four drugs were found, each in a “therapeutic” dose if taken individually, but said the drugs were not safe taken in combination. All the drugs were types of opiates.

“They are quite sedating,” McMullin said of the individual drugs. “In combination, that would be problematic. I would not prescribe them to one person — going to cause grogginess, slurred speech, poor gait.”

McMullin added that the drugs in combination had been demonstrated to cause impairment, and that it would be “ill-advised” to provide to the same person.

The jury found Reed guilty of DUI/controlled substance/impaired ability/third offense, careless driving, accident involving damage to unattended vehicle, failure to give information and render aid, and failure to report accident to police. Sentencing is scheduled for 2 p.m. Sept. 24, following a pre-sentence investigation.
