Couple to reopen Lansford Laundromat

A laundromat in Lansford is reopening under its original ownership.

Nick and Maria Ritzko opened the Panther Valley Laundromat at the corner of Ridge and Spring Garden streets in 1986 and operated it for 27 years.

Five years ago, they began the process of turning it over to another owner. After he closed up shop, they decided to reacquire it.

On Sunday, they will reopen the business with a grand opening celebration.

“I’m just glad it’s back and up and running and in good shape,” Maria Ritzko said.

The grand opening will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday. Hot dogs, sno-cones and sodas will be served.

It is the only laundromat in the Panther Valley area.

The Ritzkos decided to sell the business five years ago when they got an offer.

In the following years, Clemens Family Laundromat expanded hours and had a prominent presence on social media.

But Maria said there were numerous complaints. Some online reviews mentioned that broken machines were sometimes a problem.

Eventually, the owner of the Clemens laundromat retired and the Ritzkos took it back.

Over the last few months, they have repainted and replaced the floor inside the business.

They purchased 14 modern commercial dryers and eight commercial front-loading washers to supplement the ones that were left over from the previous owner.

Maria prepared a collage of all the work, which she and her husband had to do to get the building in good enough shape to reopen their business.

Customers will be able to see what the building looked like when they reacquired it, and what it looks like now.

She said they have always taken pride in the business — Nick would clean out the washers when they were filled with coal dirt from customers washing work clothes.

“My husband used to make them so clean, he would say ‘I could kiss the washers,’ ” she said.

Maria said part of the reason for the grand opening celebration is to thank the loyal customers for their patience and welcome them back.

“With the complaints we had, they deserve something in return,” she said.

Once the business reopens, the hours will be 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., seven days a week. Winter hours are 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekdays and 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekends.
