A Luzerne County man was spared a state prison term on Friday on a drug-dealing charge when he was sentenced to a county prison term.

He was one of three defendants who previously pleaded to drug-related charges who were sentenced by Judge Joseph J. Matika.

Shaheed Dwayne Coleman

, 33, of Hanover Township, was sentenced to serve nine to 23 months in prison on a charge of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, marijuana.

Coleman was arrested on Dec. 5, 2018, by state police at Fern Ridge following a traffic stop along Interstate 80 in Kidder Township.

The commonwealth gave Coleman a break when it agreed to let him plead to the charge with marijuana being the drug involved. Cocaine was also found at the stop. If he had pleaded to a possession count involving cocaine, the sentencing guidelines would have indicated a state prison term. It was further noted he has at least two prior convictions of possession with intent to deliver.

He was also ordered to get a drug and alcohol evaluation and follow any recommendation for treatment, supply a DNA sample, and when paroled render 100 hours of community service.

He was given credit for 21 days spent in prison on the charge. He began the jail term immediately.

Other cases

Jamie L. Lansberry

, 36, of Altoona, Blair County, was sentenced to serve one to 12 months in prison on a charge of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance. The prison term will be followed by two years of probation.

She was arrested on Sept. 4, 2018, by state police at Fern Ridge following a traffic stop along I-80 in Kidder Township. She was a passenger in the vehicle operated by Alvin M. Jefferies, 34, of Osceola Mills, Clearfield County. He previously pleaded guilty to a drug charge and was sentenced to serve 24 to 48 months in a state prison.

Found in the vehicle were 115 grams of marijuana and 14 grams of cocaine.

Lansberry was placed on probation for a year on counts of possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia, with all the terms running concurrently.

She was also ordered to get a drug and alcohol evaluation, supply a DNA sample, and when paroled render 100 hours of community service.

She was given credit for eight days already served.

She will begin serving the remainder of her sentence at 8 p.m. on July 5 and serve it on consecutive two-day weekends.

Timothy John Jones

, 28, of White Haven, was placed on probation for a year on a charge of possession of a controlled substance. He was arrested on June 22, 2017, following a traffic stop by state police at Fern Ridge.

He was also ordered to get a drug and alcohol evaluation. Jones is currently an inmate in the county prison and has pending charges in Monroe and Luzerne counties.

Each defendant must also pay court costs of about $1,000 and pay a $50 per month supervision fee while on probation or parole.
