Local Roundup: Results from April 25

Palmerton posted wins in both baseball and softball action Thursday.

Panther Valley, Tamaqua and Northwestern also recorded baseball wins, while Pleasant Valley gained victories in girls lacrosse and tennis.

BASEBALL

Sch. Haven-Panther Valley

Panther Valley held off Schuylkill Haven to gain a 3-2 Schuylkill League victory.

Mark Kokinda and Aaron Miller combined to toss a four-hitter. Kokinda, the starter and winning pitcher, allowed one earned run and struck out four. Miller worked two innings of relief and didn’t allow any hits.

Brad Buzzard had two hits and a run for the Panthers (9-5; 6-2), while Chuck Byers and Mason Goida each added a hit and a run.

Tamaqua-Lehighton

Nick Breiner and Nate Boyle both singled and scored in the top of the ninth to help Tamaqua pull out a 5-3 extra-inning Schuylkill League win over Lehighton.

The Blue Raiders (4-11; 2-6) collected 13 hits, two each from Breiner, Boyle, Brayden Knoblauch, Tate Ligenza and Brian Milot. Knoblauch knocked in three runs, while Milot scored twice.

Mason Barndt had three hits, a run and an RBI for the Indians (3-10; 0-7).

Palmerton-Catasauqua

Palmerton broke a tie with three runs in the seventh inning and went on to post an 8-5 Colonial League win over Catasauqua.

Ryan King singled to start the seventh and eventually scored on an error to give the Blue Bombers (8-6) the lead. King also slugged a two-run homer in the fifth inning that tied the game at 5-5 and pitched three scoreless innings in relief for the win.

Ben Serfass had a single, double, triple and two RBIs for the winners, who rallied from an early three-run deficit. Zach Silfies also chipped in with a hit and two RBIs.

So. Lehigh-Northwestern

Derek Holmes had three hits, two of them doubles, to help Northwestern stretch its winning streak to six games.

Holmes also knocked in a pair of runs as the Tigers posted a 6-4 Colonial League victory over Southern Lehigh.

Nathan Goodolf also finished with three hits and an RBI, while Justin Holmes added a double and knocked in two runs. Three Northwestern hurlers combined on a three-hitter.

The Tigers improved to 13-2 overall and 11-1 in the league.

Pleasant Valley-Parkland

Parkland’s Alex Oliver and Josh Miller combined on a three-hit shutout as the Trojans gained a 3-0 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference win over Pleasant Valley.

Oliver started and struck out four in 5 1/3 innings. Miller collected the save with 1 2/3 innings of hitless ball.

The Bears (9-4) received their hits from Brandon Ratti, Dallas Greenzweig and Gabe Masker. PV’s Dan McEvoy pitched well in defeat, allowing just one earned run and striking out five in six innings of work.

N. Schuylkill-Jim Thorpe

Zack Stokes had two hits, one a three-run triple, to help North Schuylkill cruise to a 14-2 Schuylkill League victory over Jim Thorpe.

Reggie Crawford also had two hits, including a two-run homer, for the winners.

For the Olympians (6-8; 3-5), Noah Snisky finished with a pair of hits and an RBI while Jared Joyce added a hit and a run.

SOFTBALL

Palmerton-Catasauqua

Palmerton exploded for 14 runs in the first inning and rolled to a 22-0 Colonial League victory over Catasauqua.

Paige Shupp and Breanna Hartranft both hit grand slams in the opening frame, while Payton Lesher and Sierra Behler also drilled solo homers in the inning.

Shupp finished with four hits, four runs and four RBIs, while Hartranft also singled in the game, scored twice and knocked in five runs. Behler ended with two hits and two runs.

Lexi Merkel struck out eight in recording a three-inning no-hitter.

Southern Lehigh snapped Northwestern’s nine-game winning streak with an 8-3 Colonial League victory.

The Spartans jumped out to a 4-0 first-inning lead and never trailed.

Emily Akelaitis paced the Tigers (12-3; 10-2) with two hits, one a solo homer, while Adan Funk added a single, double and stolen base. Morgan Farthing also chipped in with a pair of hits.

Marian-Nativity

A five-run sixth inning helped Nativity come from behind to register a 6-5 Schuylkill League win over Marian.

After the Fillies snapped a 1-1 tie with four runs in the top of the sixth, highlighted by Mia Nemeth’s two-run single, the Golden Girls responded in the bottom half of the frame.

Nemeth paced the Fillies (6-6; 4-3) with three hits and two runs, while Athena Matenkoski added a double and a run.

A big game from Carissa Yeager lifted Schuylkill Haven to a 9-6 Schuylkill League win over Panther Valley.

Yeager was the game’s winning pitcher, striking out nine, and finished with three hits.

For the Panthers (5-7; 2-6), Katrina Horvath had two hits, one a double, while Claire Kokinda belted a triple.

North Schuylkill used a 13-run third inning to help post a 19-2 Schuylkill League victory over Jim Thorpe.

Morgan Koutch tossed a three-hitter for the pitching win, and had two doubles and three RBIs at the plate.

For the Olympians (2-12 1-8), Skyler Searfoss hit a home run.

Pleasant Valley-Parkland

Kylie Hlay had four hits and knocked in five runs to power Parkland to an 11-1 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference win over Pleasant Valley.

Hlay, who also scored three runs, had a triple and three-run homer as part of her offensive performance.

Lauren Steckel had a single and run scored for the Bears (6-9), while Cam Caffrey, Madison Rosenberg and Morgan Frantz also had hits.

Tri-Valley-Weatherly

Weatherly’s Hailey Wenner and Tri-Valley’s Sydney Schley hooked up in a pitching duel, but it was the Bulldogs who pulled out a 3-1, nine-inning Schuylkill League win.

Wenner, who finished with seven strikeouts, tossed eight shutout innings before Tri-Valley used a two-run hit from Samantha Masser and an RBI from Schley to get on the scoreboard.

The Wreckers (4-7; 1-7) received an RBI from Corra Chincola and two hits from Amanda Colecio.

GIRLS LACROSSE

Phillipsburg-Pleasant Vy.

Alexandra Bush’s seven goals and two assists helped Pleasant Valley cruise to a 20-6 victory over Phillipsburg.

Jules Lopez contributed six goals and two assists, while Hayle Stintsman added three goals and a helper. The Bears (10-4) also received two goals and an assist from Brielle McInaw, along with goals from Summer Storm and Keara Dugey.

TENNIS Lehighton-Pleasant Valley

Pleasant Valley swept a doubleheader with Lehighton, posting wins of 7-0 and 6-1.

John Berry had singles victories in both matches for PV.
