Pedestrian who was struck will be charged by police

A pedestrian that was struck by a vehicle while walking in the middle of a Monroe County roadway will be charged.

Pocono Mountain Regional police said the incident occurred at 3:34 a.m. Thursday along Route 196 near Ryans Road in Coolbaugh Township.

According to police, officers responded to the above location for a pedestrian struck by a vehicle. On scene officers identified the pedestrian as Athanasio Spiliotopoulo, 70, of, Dover, New Jersey.

Police said they found Spiliotopoulo seated in a vehicle being treated by EMS unit personnel for what appeared to be not serious injuries.

The investigation revealed that Spiliotopoulo, who was wearing dark clothing, was in the middle of the roadway for unknown reasons and was struck by a vehicle traveling north. The driver of the vehicle stopped and remained at the scene.

Spiliotopoulo was transported to Lehigh Valley Hospital – Pocono Campus, East Stroudsburg. Police, who did not release the name of the driver, said he will not be charged.

Spiliotopoulo will be charged with pedestrians crossing at other than crosswalks and pedestrians walking along or on a highway, both summary offenses.
