A Slatington woman has been charged with theft after she accepted payment for her property, but said that she never received it.

According to the affidavit of probable cause filed by trooper William Hoogerhyde of the Pennsylvania State Police Troop-M Bethlehem Barracks:

At 11:53 a.m. Oct. 10, Hoogerhyde responded to the Slatington Borough Police Department in reference to a theft report.

The victim said that on July 8, he found the residence on Welshtown Road in Washington Township, listed for sale by Betty Wensel on the Facebook Market page.

The victim contacted Wensel, 46, and met with her at the property on July 9.

While at the property, the victim noticed that it appeared that Wensel was making repairs to the property. He provided her a personal Bank of America check for $3,500, cashed on July 9, and a personal Bank of America check for $3,000 cashed on July 10 for a down payment/escrow of the property.

On July 30, the victim provided a Zelle money transfer to Wensel in the amount of $2,500. On July 31, he provided a Zelle money transfer to Wensel in the amount of $1,200 for the remainder of the $10,000 sale price.

On July 31, the victim arrived at an unidentified notary in Slatington to finalize the sale of the residential property and was advised that the sale was not approved by the seller, Wensel, due to her not receiving any payment.

The victim has made numerous attempts to contact Wensel at the phone number he was provided, Facebook and her residence in Slatington, which went unanswered.

On Oct. 10, an attempt was made to contact Wensel at another address in Slatington, which revealed it to be listed for sale and vacant.

At 10:20 a.m. Oct. 17, an attempt was made to contact Wensel at a different address in Slatington with negative results.

A red Chevrolet pickup parked in the driveway was registered to Wensel.

Attempts to contact Wensel in reference to this case have been unsuccessful.

Wensel has been charged with theft by deception.

She is free in lieu of $25,000 unsecured bail, and is scheduled to have a preliminary hearing at 1:15 p.m. March 7 before District Judge Thomas Creighton of Slatington.
