Lansford man who threatened judges, police and others gets time-served sentence

A Lansford man with a history of making threats against judges, police, his ex-wife and attorneys was given a time-served sentence in Carbon County court. John Robert Large, 54, who listed his address as 26 Jones St., previously pleaded guilty but mentally ill to one count each of stalking, terroristic threats and harassment in one case, and he pleaded to another count of terroristic threats in a second case.

Large will not be released from custody. He has pending charges in Luzerne County of terroristic threats, criminal attempt - theft by extortion and criminal use of a communication facility.

These charges stem from several incidents in June 2016.

On June 12, 2016, Large threatened his ex-wife and her parents. He is charged with leaving a dead snake and crow on her property with threatening notes. He pleaded to terroristic threats for that incident with charges of harassment, and not having permits from the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission and Pennsylvania Game Commission.

On June 13, 2016, Large threatened Lehighton state police with a reference to the Orlando, Florida, attack in which a gunman entered a night club and opened fire, killing 49.

Also, Large called in a bomb threat to both the home and office of Palmerton attorney Gerald Strubinger Jr. According to court records, Strubinger represented Large’s ex-wife in a custody hearing.

In that case he pleaded to the stalking, threats and harassment charges. Charges of terrorism, another count of terroristic threats and harassment were dropped.

Large fled the area and was apprehended in Vermont where he got into more trouble for threatening a judge in that state and had to be removed from a Vermont courtroom because of his unruly behavior. He was eventually extradited to Pennsylvania to face the new charges.

Sentence

At the plea hearing First Assistant District Attorney Michael S. Greek and attorney Michael P. Gough, who was appointed to represent Large, entered into evidence a transcript of a plea hearing held in Lehigh County where the presiding judge ruled that Large committed his crimes in that county at a time when he was mentally ill.

Also submitted was a psychological report prepared by a psychiatrist as ordered by the court.

Senior Judge Dudley N. Anderson, of Lycoming County, specially presiding in Carbon County, sentenced Large to serve a total of 10 to one day less 20 months in prison. However, Large was given credit for a total of 560 days spent in prison on the charges and paroled.

Anderson is one of several senior judges who has heard criminal cases against Large in recent years as the county’s three sitting judges recused themselves from his cases after he threatened the life of the late Carbon Judge David W. Addy.

Anderson also ordered Large to get both drug and alcohol and mental health evaluations including residential inpatient treatment at a facility in Nazareth (provided funding is available), supply a DNA sample, render 200 hours of community service when paroled, make restitution of $5,629 to one victim and have no contact with any of the victims in the two cases, pay court costs of about $1,000 and pay a $50 per month supervision fee while on parole.

Other cases

Large also has pending charges in Northampton County of threats and harassment. He faces charges in connection with threatening phone calls made to a Bethlehem woman as well as a Northampton County Judge Emil Giordano.

According to a criminal complaint, Large made harassing phone calls to a woman around 1:30 a.m. on Oct. 31, 2015. He threatened the woman’s life.

Police obtained the number from the call and matched it with Large’s cellphone.

Large was arrested in 2014 for recording the same woman, according to police.

Police said that on Dec. 21, 2015, Large called Giordano at his home around 1 a.m. and threatened to “declare war on the Pennsylvania judicial system,” starting with Giordano.

In June 2014, he was charged with threatening an administrator for HCR Manor Care, Bethlehem, where Large’s daughter was a patient.
