Heavy rains flood area roads

Flooded roads on Thursday afternoon resulted in detours and slowed travel throughout the region.

In Carbon County, flooding closed Route 895 between Lauchnor and Germans Road in East Penn Township, Lower Smith Gap Road between Little Gap Road and Bridge Road in Lower Towamensing Township and Country Club Road between Route 443 and Mahoning Drive in Mahoning Township.

Lehighton Area School District notified parents that students would be arriving home late because of detours.

Intersections were under water in other areas, with more than 1 to 1½ inches of rain falling over the region during the day.

It was nearly impossible to determine where the roadway was at the intersection with Mill Pond Road in Gilbert.

In Polk Township the road crews responded to calls from residents regarding the standing water and blocked sewer drains and spent the afternoon making sure that the drains were cleared.

The crews called it an early day, planning to return early Friday to deal with the icy roads resulting from the drop in temperature.

One of the hardest-hit roads in the area was the Saylorsburg section of Weir Lake Road.

In the stretch between Blue Ridge Road and James Drive, muddy water cascaded down along the road.

Local fire departments were also kept busy pumping water out of basements.
