Carbon County court

An Albrightsville man was sentenced to a county prison term recently in Carbon County court on a simple assault count. He was one of three defendants who previously entered guilty pleas who were sentenced by Judge Steven R. Serfass.

Penn Forest incident

Edward Joseph Hughes

, 60, of Albrightsville, was sentenced to serve six to one day less 24 months in prison on the charge.

He was charged for an incident on July 26, 2016, at a residence along Kilmer Trail in Penn Forest Township. State police at Fern Ridge responded to the home for a reported domestic dispute. On scene troopers were told by the female victim she had been assaulted by Hughes, who said he pushed her to the ground, causing her to strike her head. When troopers attempted to take him into custody, he struggled with the officers, which led to a charge of aggravated assault.

In a plea bargain with the district attorney’s office, the aggravated assault count, along with resisting arrest, harassment and criminal mischief charges were dropped.

He was also ordered to get both a drug and alcohol and mental health evaluations and follow any recommendations for treatment.

He will begin the jail term on Jan. 14 at 9 a.m.

Other cases

Aaron E. Bortz

, 33, of Lehighton, was sentenced to serve five days to six months in jail on a DUI count.

He was arrested on April 4, 2018, by Lehighton police along Ninth Street. A test revealed a 0.17 BAC.

He was ordered to pay a fine of $500, his license was suspended for a year and he must render 25 hours of community service.

He began serving the term on Dec. 28 at 6 p.m. and will serve it on alternating two-day weekends.

Lawrence Jeremy Daiell

, 61, of Albrightsville, was sentenced to serve 48 hours to six months in jail on a DUI count. He was also ordered to pay a fine of $500, his license was suspended for a year and he must render 25 hours of community service.

He was arrested on March 12, 2017, by state police at Lehighton along Route 903 in Penn Forest Township. A test revealed a 0.20 BAC.

Adam Robert Smith

, 38, of Scranton, was placed on probation for 60 months on a DUI count and 60 months probation on a endangering the welfare of a child with both terms running concurrently. He was also ordered to pay a fine of $1,500, his license was suspended for 18 months and he must render a total of 200 hours of community service.

He was arrested on Aug. 11, 2017, by state police at Fern Ridge.

He must also get a mental health evaluation.

Each defendant must also pay court costs of about $1,000 and a $50 per month supervision fee while on probation or parole.
