17-year-old dies after accident at Blue Mountain Ski Area

A 17-year-old male from New Jersey died after an accident Tuesday at Blue Mountain Resort.

The male was pronounced dead at St. Luke’s Palmerton Campus at 12:44 p.m. following the incident.

Carbon County Coroner Bob Miller said he was from New Jersey.

Miller said an autopsy was scheduled to be performed this morning to determine the cause of death.

Tricia Matsko, director of sales & marketing at Blue Mountain Resort, said the incident occurred at 11:30 a.m. and is under investigation.

“We don’t know a lot of what happened exactly,” Matsko said. “Our hearts go out to his family; this is a terrible way to start the new year.”

Matsko said the teen was at the resort for skiing.

The resort was also the site of two fatal crashes last year.

On March 15, 20-year-old Euna Shin of Piscataway, New Jersey, died from head injuries after a fall while snowboarding.

Grygoriy Sologub, 53, of Marcus Hook, outside of Philadelphia, died Jan. 21 from blunt-force trauma to the head and neck after another skier ran into him on a slope.
