Bears capture tournament crown

Another night, another dominating win for Pleasant Valley.

After staying unbeaten with a convincing victory against Northern Lehigh Thursday night in the Lady Indian Holiday tournament, the Bears took their winning streak into Friday night’s championship game.

Pleasant Valley pulled away early and never looked back in a 59-35 win over Palmerton to take home the title.

“When we got the ball, we looked to push,” Pleasant Valley head coach Nadia Gauronsky said. “We got easy transition baskets and that was great as we continued. We knew they have a very good freshman [Brianna] Moore. We told our girls we’re going to contain her. We’re not going to let her drive right. We’re going to make sure we’re on her on all times.”

The swiftness of the Bears turned into easy transition baskets and an early 14-3 run to open the game.

Pleasant Valley really began to pull away from the Bombers with an explosive 21-point third quarter. Madison Rosenburg accounted for four buckets and Cameron Caffrey nailed two three-pointers to add onto the lead.

“That’s usually our game plan is to make as many transition baskets as we possibly can and wear teams down,” Gauronsky said. “We have the numbers to do so, and that’s to our benefit. All eight of the girls who play the majority of the time do a really nice job.”

“Our girls are pretty quick getting up-and-down the floor. They’re very athletic, and they shoot the ball and rebound well. These are all positives for us. They’re unselfish in the way they move the basketball.”

Caffrey led the scoring affair for the Bears with a 20-point night to seal the deal as the tournament’s MVP. Caffrey had a double-digit night for the second-straight game, scoring a total of 33 points in two tourney games. The majority of Palmerton’s scoring came from freshman Brianna Moore, who led the Bombers with 13 points.

But the Blue Bombers were out-matched with Pleasant Valley showing its firepower right out of the box.

“I think that they have a great ball-club there,” Palmerton coach Dan Beck said of the Bears. They’re real quick, they’re big, they’re strong. They’re well-schooled. They do a great job.

“We couldn’t match their speed and I think they shot very well too. We didn’t shoot very well and take care of the ball, which we needed to. We’ll have games like that.”

Palmerton struggled offensively, getting as close as cutting the deficit to three early in the second quarter. From there on, Pleasant Valley’s offense was too much and the Bombers settled as the tournament runner-up .

“Offensively, I don’t think I did a good job of getting a couple of my players open shots,” Beck added. “When they had the open shots, we didn’t make too many either. We’ll learn, we’ll move on and we’ll get back in our league and see what happens.”

BRIGHT SPOT ... Beck thought his team did a nice job against the Bears’ pressure.. “We were worried about the press, but I thought we did a good job at breaking it,” he said. “But we didn’t think they were going to shoot as well as they did.”

FAST BREAK ... Pleasant Valley’s fast-break was on point Friday night, and it led to a lot of scoring. “I think our kids work hard down low and they do the right stuff,” coach Nadia Gauronsky said. “Our fast-break was started by boxing out and our kids did a nice job of that and got it to our guards who get to score a lot. “
