Palmerton woman sentenced in assault attempt

A Palmerton woman was sentenced to jail for asking someone to beat up a teenage girl who lived next door.

Tiffany Hittner, 36, received a 1-12 month sentence Friday after pleading guilty to soliciting an assault on the girl in August 2017. She was given credit for time served.

Police learned of the plot and charged Hittner.

The victim, now 18, and her parents said Hittner’s threats had a deep effect on them. The parents kept the girl under a tight curfew and she had to move out of the house while still in school because she became anxious around Hittner.

Hittner and the victim lived next door to each other on a row house block in Palmerton.

During sentencing, Judge Roger Nanovic asked Hittner repeatedly why she would want to hurt the victim. Hittner blamed her alcohol addiction at the time.

The victim said she believed it was because Hittner was feuding with her parents at the time. She said the feud started after Hittner bought a dog and they were bothered by it barking.

Nanovic said the crime was more serious because when the threat took place the victim was scheduled to testify against Hittner in a case in magisterial district court.

The victim said she thought Hittner targeted for a different reason — because she wanted to get revenge on the victim’s mother, but found the daughter to be a weaker target.

Hittner said the incident occurred during the depths of an alcohol addiction.

She has been clean for 11 months and successfully completed a Salvation Army treatment program.

Her husband testified that Hittner had reformed herself, and if she hadn’t their marriage would have ended.

Hittner also pleaded guilty in two DUI cases which occurred in 2018, as well as a persistent disorderly conduct charge in which her husband was the victim. Nanovic allowed the sentences to be served concurrently with the soliciting assault sentence.

Hittner was also ordered to have no contact with the victim.
