Franklin Township leaves tax rate in check

Franklin Township residents may have received the best Christmas present of all, at least from a financial standpoint.

Once again, the township’s board of supervisors on Tuesday unanimously agreed to adopt the 2019 budget with no millage increase.

The board’s decision will leave the millage rate in check at 7.64 mills.

Of that, 6.3 mills is for general purposes; 0.537 for the capital reserve building fund; and 0.800 for the fire hydrant fund for properties within 780 feet of fire hydrants.

Next year’s spending plan also calls for no increase in the garbage or sewer rates, according to borough secretary Brenda Neeb.

The last time residents saw a tax increase was in 2010, when taxes were raised by 1.5 mills.

Supervisors also took the following action:

• Agreed to file for a permit on behalf of the township volunteer fire company to install a dry hydrant located at the intersection of Greenwood and Hemlock streets. The fire company applied for a grant, and the permit is needed in order to procure the grant.

• Approved the Carbon County Fire Chief’s Association Mutual Aid Agreement.

• Announced there will be no changes in garbage collection pickup for Christmas Day or New Year’s Day.

• Announced that Christmas trees can be disposed of at the Phifer Ice Dam Park using the Penn Street entrance, beginning Dec. 29.

• Announced that the township’s reorganization meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 7.

• Announced that the board will hold its regular monthly meeting at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 15.
