Changes in Jim Thorpe

It’s been some time since I’ve penned a letter to the editor. Many have asked why. Most things are time sensitive, and if you don’t respond quickly, John Q. Public has no clue what you are talking about. Enough nonsense!

Usually only when something really irks me do I dip the pen in the poison ink. Not that things are so great that nothing bothers me, but I’ll touch a few points with this letter.

Jim Thorpe is a nice, beautiful little town, right? I think so, anyway. Why is it everyone wants to change our small town into the “big city,” also known as the kiosks. I think it might be Russian for “stupid parking.” It used to be so easy to go to the west side of town. Just pull in when you find an empty spot, put money in the meter, and you have a certain amount of time to accomplish your mission. That same task is now a venture! Maybe I’m old, which I am, and stupid, but it was something that did not need to be fixed. It wasn’t broken. Besides the nostalgia, the old meters gave a touch of quaintness to the town. It was easier on the locals. What about us? All is done for tourism with little regard for us!

Another stupid thing was the grand opening of the $5 million bridge to nowhere. Why would you have a grand opening and closing on the same day? Is that stupid, or is it just me? I think not! Would it not make more sense to wait until everything is completed to have a grand opening?

Another thing that griped me was the complaining about signs posted on a property’s fence near the new bridge. Why was there never one complaint about all the signs that were posted on the wall on the way to the Acme market which was borough property? Besides, all postings were for nonprofit organizations. Once the trees planted grow, you won’t be able to see the fence. But I think that problem was resolved. I don’t know. On another note, I was told some time ago by a reliable source who has since met his demise that a wall was to be constructed on the corner property so people could continue to hang their signs, but I guess that must have fallen through the cracks. Funds must have run out.

A native chunker,

Pete Bott,
