New York man in prison on drug charges

A New York man on parole was caught with drug paraphernalia.

Michael Newton, 35, faces charges on possession of manufacture, delivery, or possession with intent to manufacture or deliver, along with use/possession of drug paraphernalia.

According to the affidavit of probable cause filed by trooper William Golden of the Pennsylvania State Police Fern Ridge barracks:

On Nov. 7, Golden saw a black Dodge Charger traveling westbound on Interstate 80 at the rate of 72 mph, which is over the posted speed of 65 mph.

Golden saw the vehicle edge to the centerline, partially crossing it with its passenger side, before correcting itself and returning to the left lane.

Golden conducted a traffic stop at mile marker 280.3.

Golden detected a strong odor of marijuana through the passenger window.

He identified the front passenger as Newton, and the female driver as Jamica Maisonet. The vehicle was rented by Newton’s wife, who was not with him.

Golden saw Newton had nervous energy while they spoke, and asked him to step out of the vehicle.

While at the rear of his vehicle, Golden informed Newton of the odor he detected, to which Newton said that they had smoked earlier, referring to marijuana.

During a consent search, Golden found a bag suspected to be cocaine, with a second bag of suspected heroin. Newton had $371.

Newton was taken into custody. Golden conducted a search of the vehicle, where two cellphones were located that Newton identified as his.

While in custody, Newton said he is currently on New York state parole.

Newton was transported to the Fern Ridge barracks without incident. The suspected cocaine weighed 61 grams and the heroin weighed 30 grams.

The suspected drugs were submitted to state police for further testing.

Newton is incarcerated in the Carbon County Correctional Facility in lieu of $100,000 bail.

He was scheduled to have a preliminary hearing today.
