Legion looks to become more family-friendly

The Lehighton American Legion Post 314 has recently undergone a makeover of sorts.

For starters, there’s a new commanding officer in Dave Breyfogle, a Vietnam era veteran who served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War.

“I do not make any decisions on my own,” Breyfogle said.

Breyfogle said there’s also a new eight-member house committee that is comprised of Steve Youngkin, Carl Haydt, William Fisher Jr., Kevin Long, Harry Procina, Ron Frable Sr., Hans Keller and Glenn Troutman.

“We have eight good men on our house committee,” he said. “I think I picked the right group of guys.”

The legion is now a nonsmoking facility during dining hours, as it is trying to become a more family-friendly establishment, Breyfogle said.

“We have an excellent cook, fantastic food,” he said.

Dining hours are 5-7 p.m. Monday, and 5-9 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday. Bingo is held at 7 p.m. on Mondays.

Breakfast is held once a month from 8-11:30 a.m. on the third Sunday of the month up to May.

Breyfogle said the legion has some new ideas in the works, such as the potential for live entertainment, as well as a Chinese auction, and a movie night complete with popcorn and hot dogs.

“We’ve got to give something to bring people out,” Breyfogle said. “We want it to be more family friendly, where they can come out, have a good time and leave with a smile on (their) face.”

Hunter’s Day will be held from 1-5 p.m. Nov. 10. Call 610-377-0511 for more information.

Breyfogle said new memberships are available at the bar and that anyone wishing to join should bring their discharge paper, photo identification and driver’s license. Social members only need to bring their driver’s license.

“We’re planning on different things for our younger veterans,” he said. “We’re trying to get this club better, trying to get more members, people to support us.”
