Pleasant Valley School Board presented with MCTI comprehensive plan feasibility study

Thursday evening Monroe County Technical Institute Director Dennis Virga presented the school’s most recent proposal for a full-time comprehensive high school program.

“The comprehensive plan is revisited every three years or so,” Virga told school board directors. “But this is by far the most reasonable version to date.”

If adopted, the comprehensive plan would mean that all four grade levels would attend MCTI full-time. Currently only the ninth grade attends full-day classes at MCTI. Older students currently enrolled in the program attend technical and career classes at MCTI and academics at their sending district.

The total cost for this design is between $13 million and $16 million. The main difference would be a full gymnasium as opposed to a fitness center.

The new addition to the school would be added to the front of the existing building, allowing for safety and security concerns to be addressed with the new design. The addition would house administration and classrooms and would be three stories high.

“Time is the biggest problem we face,” Virga said. “The more time spent traveling to and from the sending district the less instructional time.”

Virga estimated that Pleasant Valley students lose about 90 hours a year in instructional time due to midday travel.

Pleasant Valley commits 2.2 percent of its budget to MCTI. Under the comprehensive plan, that number would jump to 2.9 to 3.1 percent. The district would have a small savings in the cost of transportation.

“I have been through a few of these three-year intervals,” said Sue Kresge. “This is the best plan I have seen, and I hope it happens.”
